Remove Strange Formatting

Have you ever let your dog outside to go about his business, and when you called him back inside he brought a dead animal back with him? Your dog probably looked up at your with a big smile, so proud of the animal that he brought back to you. However, you look on with disgust because you didn’t want this extra animal, just your own dog to return home.

what on earth

Now you might have been happy if your dog brought back a dead woodchuck because they tear up your yard, but most of the time you could do without the dead animals appearing on your doorstep. So…what does this have to do with removing strange formatting?

Well, it turns out your computer follows a similar behavior. When you copy something on your computer, your computer might save that data to your clipboard. What you might not know is that it is also copying the formatting of the original text that you copied. I might find this useful sometimes when I’m copying something into Microsoft Word, but when it comes to blogging, this can get annoying. Have you ever seen a post that looked like this:

text problem

Why did the font change and what’s with the white background behind the text? Unfortunately, your computer has brought back that dead animal that you were really hoping not to see again. You might not see this copied formatting when you are pasting in your blog’s post editor, but if you were to switch to your HTML tab, you would see a mess like this:

Do you see this: style=”background-color: white; and this: font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;

This is the HTML that is causing your problem. So how do you fix it? Well, we can go about it two ways. The first is just to prevent this from happening in the future. All you have to do is copy the text like normal, paste it in, select all of the text and then click this button for Blogger:

Or this for WordPress:

wordpressremoveAwesome! But wait…I don’t want to do this for all of my previous posts that have this problem. If you’re having this problem with many of your older posts, we can just override that additional formatting with CSS of our own. To add CSS, go to Blogger > Template > Customize (button) > Advanced > Add CSS. For WordPress, go to Appearance > Editor. Then paste in the CSS below:

Then you should be all set! I hope this helps solve that strange formatting mystery that you were having =)

  1. Hahaha I love your metaphor for this. I haven’t had this particular problem happen to me, but the biggest thing with weird formatting that happens to me is that WordPress will either take out or add a bajillion spaces between paragraphs in a post that don’t show up before it’s published. So I always have to preview a post first and then edit it to remove all the extra spaces before it goes live…SO ANNOYING. I don’t even understand.

    1. Hmmm I’m not sure why that would be happening either. I’d have to see what the post looks like before you go in and remove the extra spaces. Also keep in mind that your paragraph texts is automatically being wrapped up in p tags. These paragraph tags have margin spacing below each paragraph that adds extra space. I’m not sure if that is what you are encountering or not though :/

  2. This is super helpful! I just encountered the white background w/copied text and I have been manually going into each post and deleting it, but that clear formatting button should be helpful. I don’t think it’s happened on any older posts, but if I encounter it, I’ll definitely add the CSS. Thanks so much!

  3. Hi!
    I was wondering if you could send me the code and instructions on how to get those tabs and social icons on the author box. I’m working on a blog site for a Pastor and think this would be a helpful addition to what he needs. :)

    Please write me back as soon as you can!

  4. I usually paste what I copied on the internet into notepad and copied it again from there so all the formatting will go away. It’s not very pro like but it works! xD
