WordPress Starter Themes

WordPress has so many options for themes, it can be a bit overwhelming. How are you supposed to choose between a framework, child theme, starter theme, and starting a theme from scratch? I think we can split these 4 options in 2. Either you want to have the ability to change anything about the theme, or you only want to change a few things and not deal with much code. I would recommend frameworks and child themes if you don’t want to change much about the layout of the theme and don’t want to deal with a lot of php code. I would recommend a starter theme or creating a theme from scratch if you want full control of your theme to change anything.

I’m not going to discuss all of these options today. Instead I want to focus just on starter themes. These Paper Hearts is actually based on a starter theme. Wait, what are starter themes?

Starter themes contain the basics you need to create your own WordPress theme. It’s like starting from scratch, but someone wrote all the php code for you! All you need to do is make a few edits and add your own styling. Creating a theme from scratch can be a good learning experience to get a better handle on php, but not everyone has time for that. I know the basics of php, but most of what I need to change I can just Google to find the answer. WordPress Codex is my go to site when I’m trying to figure something out in WordPress. Here are a couple starter themes you could use to get started:

The Underscores starter theme is a great theme and one I highly recommend. It’s the theme I use :) It has very basic CSS, so you’ll need to be good with CSS in order to make it look good. This theme has the least amount of CSS compared to the next two starter themes.

Bones is another good starter theme. It comes with a bit more CSS than Underscores. I haven’t used it myself, but I’ve seen plenty of sites that recommend it.

This last theme that I’ll feature is called Roots. This starter theme contains more styles and features than most starter themes. Bootstrap is included in this theme, which if you know how to use it, can make it easier to style the theme.

If you want to learn more about any of these themes, just click on the theme images above. Let me know if you have any questions!
